Between these pages you will find what I am trying to believe: that each of us can feel lucky, at least for a while. Maybe not today or tomorrow. Maybe we have been or will be. Soon? I don't know. But once we are alive - I hope there is something here for us, in our form and in our language. There has to be.

By luck I mean: that moment when the air fills your lungs, without hesitation, without anxiety. That moment when every part of the world is expecting you. Even more, it sustains you. That moment when your shoulders drop, without any weight, and your whole body feels welcomed. Even more, it feels loved.

Nurturing, serene and clear, these are words to read and re-read, that make the seemingly invisible links between all things shine, and the awareness of interdependence - grow.

A prayer for a nondual spirituality that sees and mourns those lost, excluded, extinguished or scorched (by the fault of the capitalist Anthropocene), and at the same time creates reclaiming space for pleasure, play, craving, pawing, space for (just) being, together: a space of radical hope. Read it, you'll feel like a lucky being.

Carolina Vozian

Maria Martelli's poetry is of the earth, of cherry trees, of dürüm kebab made of seitan, of seedlings, rains and heatwaves, of the end of the world as we have known it until now, of the beginning of the world as we dream it together, human and non-human beings.

In the volume the relations between humans and so-called companion animals come to the fore, and I consider it the first volume of poetry of its kind in local literature. The verses written with and about the dogs Aki, Nuna, Mushi and Terra, as well as the cat Aria, are an exploration full of love, curiosity for each other and listening to what it means to live together as fairly as possible in an unfair world.

Nóra Ugron

Very few contemporary texts, let alone debut works, are structured around a "slippery" concept such as "luck". I call it slippery because it can easily fall into a problematic determinism and annihilate the agency of the "less fortunate", blocking forms of possible revolt.

Surprisingly, Maria Martelli succeeds in this volume in hijacking this meaning and using "luck" as a force for action by the most vulnerable, those whom the capitalist world locks into the circle of the "inactive".

 Iulia Militaru

A shimmering web of life is offered to us in this volume, in which destruction and extinction are set against a gentle horizon, radiating hope: that of living together and caring for all the bonds that sustain us.

Wrapped in the mantle of intimacy, this poetry offers a solid plea for rethinking the world in the age of the capitalocene, and an essential question: 'How might we all live together better?'

"How do you make a pig human? That was the question. Turning a human into a pig was easier."

The story follows the adventures of a little girl and her best friend, a pig. The two spend days full of play and laughter in their home village, eating snacks, cabbage pies and potatoes together. One day, however, the little girl learns of the grave danger that awaits the little sow and sets off on a fantastic journey to rescue her.

"The Story of the Sow and Becoming a Human" is a children's fairy tale written by Maria Martelli, illustrated by Otilia Jakab and edited by people from the Queer Vegan Community (CVQ). It first appeared online on the Literature and Feminism platform and was later published by Hecate (2022).

Such a beautifully written story with an ending that made me cry.

If I had read this fairy tale when I was younger, I would have picked up reading much sooner, but it's not too late to read it no matter what age!
Please, please read it!!!

The most beautiful story I've read, I don't know if in my lifetime, but in the last many years for sure!
